Asking for the caller’s identity:

Introducing yourself:

Asking to talk to someone:

When you make a telephone call, sometimes you are asked to hold so that the person who receives the call can get the person you want to talk to. Here are some phrases to ask somebody to hold:
- Just a second (informal)
- Wait a minute! (informal)
- Hang on a second! (informal)
- Could you please hold?
- One moment, please?
- I’ll get him/her.

Situation: Making reservation for booking a hotel room

Hotel Receptionist = HR
The caller = C

HR : Plaza Hotel, Good morning…Leo’s speaking
C    : Ah yes, I want to book 2 rooms for myself and my father.
       
        Could you tell me the cost of a single room per night?        
       
HR  : Certainly. The rate of a single room is $ 40.
        When would you like to have them?
C    : From the 25th to 28th of February
HR  : Arriving on the 25th, leaving on the 28th, three nights?
C    : That’s right
HR  : Just a moment please.
C    : Alright.

Teks report adalah salah satu jenis teks (genre) dalam bahasa Inggris yang menjelaskan sesuatu apa adanya. Teks ini mempunyai langkah-langkah retorika (generic structure) yang terdiri dari: General Classification dan Description.

  1. General Classification: Klasifikasi umum tentang apa yang dijelaskan (tells what the phenomenon under discussion is)
  2. Description: menjelaskan fenomena-fenomena yang sedang dijelaskan dalam bagian-bagian, kualitas, kebiasaan dan tingkah laku (tells what the phenomenon under discussion is like in term of parts, qualities, habits or behavior).
Fungsi sosial teks report (social function of report text) adalah untuk menjelaskan sesuatu apa adanya.

Hotel
General Classification Hotels are buildings where people provide meals and rooms for travelers.
Description The first impression the guests have of a hotel is a doorman and a bellboy at the door and the clerks at the front of desk greet them. The guests often form their opinion of the hotel by the reception they receive. The guests are usually happy if they feel welcome and can get to their rooms quickly.

The Simple Present Tense

The Simple Present Tense is used to talk about things in general. We are not thinking only events in the present time. We can also use it to explain that something happens all time or repeatedly.
The Simple Present Tense Pattern:


    Subject + to be (is/am/are) + Complement
    Subject + Verb 1 (+s) + Complement


To show present events you can use some adverbs of time, such now, every morning/ day…twice a week, very often etc.
Examples:
  • Nurses look after patients in hospital
  • In Britain most of the shops close at 5.30 p m
  • Remember that we say he/she/it. Don’t forget the -s
  • I work in a bank. Barry works in a shop.
  • He comes from Japan

Adjectives

Adjectives is used to describe the condition of the people, animals or things.
  • a careful boy
  • a brave girl

  • a smart dog
